Christian Cole is more than just a furniture maker; he is a testament to the power of perseverance and creativity. Specialising in custom timber furniture and architectural joinery, Christian’s work is not only beautiful but also environmentally conscious, utilising 100% recycled timber and sustainably sourced materials. His journey from humble beginnings to running a successful business is a story of dedication, hard work, and a passion for craftsmanship.
Early Beginnings
Christian’s love for furniture making ignited when he was just 16 years old. His early days were spent in a small furniture shop, where he learned the craft from a mentor who imparted invaluable skills. “I worked for an incredibly gifted, unique character who taught me a lot,” Christian recalls. “It was chaotic at times, but I learned the essence of what it means to create.”
After completing his apprenticeship, Christian took the brave step of starting his own business at the age of 23. However, the journey was fraught with challenges. “It was a struggle to make ends meet,” he admits. To support himself, he juggled working for another furniture maker while trying to grow his own business.
The Hustle of Entrepreneurship
Christian’s path led him through various jobs, including a stint in the building industry, before he found his footing in furniture making once again. “I started in my parents’ garage, working in a tiny space,” he shares. “It was a humble beginning, but it laid the foundation for everything that followed.”
As his business grew, he transitioned into leasing a small factory and later moved to a larger facility. Eventually, he purchased land to build his current workshop in Coburg North, where he combines his showroom and production space. “It’s been a hard hustle, but every step has been worth it,” he reflects.
The Craft of Customisation
Christian’s workshop is a hub of creativity, where each piece of furniture is custom-made. “We work with over 40 different types of timber,” he explains. “Every job is unique, and we involve our clients in the design process. It’s special for them to see their vision come to life.”
Quality is paramount in Christian’s work. “We set a high standard here,” he asserts. “Nothing leaves the workshop unless it’s spot on.” His commitment to excellence has earned him a reputation for outstanding craftsmanship across the globe.
A Connection to the Community, Carbitool and Sutton Tools
Christian’s work goes beyond furniture making; it fosters connections with clients and suppliers alike. He expresses gratitude for the support of companies like Carbitool and Sutton Tools, stating, “I’ve always used their tools because they’re simply the best. It’s nice to back Aussie companies that share a commitment to quality.”
His passion for craftsmanship has also led him to collaborate with a wide range of clients, making his work a staple in homes across the country. “Sometimes we have up to 30 clients on the books, and I communicate with them daily,” he shares. “It’s about building relationships and delivering something truly special.”
The Block
Christian’s journey took an exciting turn when he was invited to participate in the hit television show, The Block. It all started with a phone call from a contestant in need of furniture. “I had never been on TV before, but I thought, why not?” he recalls. “That was about 12 seasons ago, and it’s been a fantastic experience.”
His involvement with The Block has significantly boosted his business and raised awareness of his brand. “It’s nerve-wracking, but I love the challenge,” he admits. “I often work through the night to meet tight deadlines, sometimes even spending over 100 hours on a single piece.”
Looking Ahead
As Christian looks to the future, he remains committed to pushing the boundaries of his craft. “You have to keep innovating,” he asserts. “The market is always changing, and we must adapt to keep up.”
Through hard work, resilience, and a passion for craftsmanship, Christian Cole has not only built a successful business but also created a legacy of quality and creativity. His journey is an inspiration, reminding us that with determination and heart, anything is possible.
He notes, “At the end of the day, it’s about the joy of creating something beautiful and meaningful.’’
