Sutton Tools ensures maximum precision in quality assurance by using the Bruker Alicona InfiniteFocus G6 system. The company relies on the advanced optical 3D measurement system to maintain its long-standing reputation for high-performance, durable cutting tools.

Located in the company’s SMART Centre, the InfiniteFocus G6 is used for high-resolution, repeatable, and non-destructive measurements across a wide range of tool geometries — including drills, taps, end mills, and reamers.

“I use the G6 to scan tools and analyze features like flute shapes, edge rounding, and surface roughness,” explains Fuad Ahmed, Product Engineer at Sutton Tools. “The system’s 3D measurements, area-based inspections, and EdgeMaster functionalities are invaluable to our work.”

Sutton Tools selected the InfiniteFocus G6 after working with a previous Alicona system. The decision was based on the speed of the system, the ease of lens changeover, and its expanded functionality, especially when measuring larger or more complex tool geometries. The system also helps tackle measurement challenges, such as tools with high helix angles or reflective coatings. Its software features, including the merging function in MetMaX, allow precise inspection of hard-to-reach areas.

“We typically scan one tool per day with an accuracy of 100 nanometers or better,” adds Dr. John H. Navarro Devia, R&D Engineer at Sutton Tools. “We use the G6 not only for finished tools, but also to measure raw bars, machined parts, and prototypes across both our high-performance and DIY segments.”

With its compact installation footprint and intuitive operation, the system is used daily by more than five engineers and plays a key role in product development and process optimization.
