Ross, when did your love for woodworking begin?

My woodworking journey began in childhood, tinkering alongside my dad, an engineer with a knack for hands-on projects. Those early experiences laid the foundation for my craft, from renovating homes to restoring cars. After completing a VET course in furniture making and an apprenticeship, I embarked on various adventures, from music to travel, before returning to my true passion and establishing Ross Thompson Furniture.

Tell us about the types of wood you favour and the factors influencing your choices.

In my creations, I blend a variety of woods, but my go-to solid timbers include Walnut, Blackwood, Maple, American Oak, Ash, and Vic Ash. However, I’m particularly passionate about promoting veneered timber, often misunderstood and underappreciated.

Its beauty, versatility, and sustainability make it a great choice. When selecting wood, I consider the piece’s purpose and longevity. For instance, solid timber may be preferable for durability, while veneer offers flexibility for curved designs and unique grain patterns.

Your Maker Of The Year entry Cocktail Cabinet design is stunning. Where did you draw inspiration for it?

The Cocktail Cabinet draws inspiration from my travels through Europe in 2015, particularly the craftsmanship of the early 20th century. It’s a study in contrast, blending simplicity with technical complexity. Each element, from the Ebony veneer to the curvature of the doors, was chosen to enhance both form and function. For me, integrating materials seamlessly into the design is paramount, ensuring they’re not just decorative but integral to the piece’s identity.

Can you share any innovative techniques you use in your furniture-building process?

I’m a firm advocate for veneer work, often overlooked due to misconceptions. When used correctly, veneer unlocks endless design possibilities, from intricate patterns to access to rare timbers. However, it requires careful application and finishing to avoid common pitfalls. By guiding clients through the process and showcasing the potential of veneer, I aim to create truly unique pieces that stand the test of time.

Finally, what advice would you offer to aspiring woodworkers?

Take it slow and enjoy the journey. Start with quality tools and gradually expand your skill set. Remember, it’s not just about craftsmanship but also about design. Strive to create pieces that are not only well-made but visually captivating. Woodworking is both a hobby and a career filled with endless opportunities for creativity and fulfilment. Enjoy every moment of it.
